FAQs

How to find your head size:

Head size usually refers to the circumference of your head, at the line above the ears where the hat will sit most comfortably. You can find your head size by using a soft measuring tape, or using a string (mark the string where it meets around your head, then measure the string with a conventional ruler).

Your milliner may also ask for your “crown depth,” which is the height of your head, in order to determine the best fit in the top of the hat (the crown). To find this measurement, start measuring at the top of one ear, pass the measurement tape (or string, as above) across the highest point of your head and down to the top of the other ear.

Have these two measurements ready, and you are ready to order custom millinery!

Please include your head circumference size, as well as your crown depth size ready when ordering a custom made hat. The milliner will contact you for this information if it isn’t included with your order. The production of a custom hat begins with knowing your size!

Where is the material sourced?

At MKH Millinery the source is as important as the final product. The best silks and straws are imported directly from suppliers all over the world, with new relationships building all the time.

All felt used in the studio is 100% sheep’s wool, never rabbit fur (commonly known as “fur felt”) which cannot guarantee a no-cruelty approach. Using only ethical wool, and sourcing the best felt, is an important step in delivering positive hats that will last, and that will continue to make the wearer feel good, even on the inside.

Handmade?

Yes! Each hat or headpiece is crafted in my studio by hand, for each individual order. Using only traditional millinery techniques of hand sewing and shaping each piece, the slow process ensures couture results that are custom fit to each client’s needs.

This website holds a number of millinery style examples. Once you choose a shape, contact me to discuss custom options before checking out. I am happy to discuss custom colours, embellishments and other details to make your hat fit your dreams…

What style of hat is best for my face shape?

There are several ways to describe face shape, and many confusing infographics that describe only some face shapes, but not usually the full combination of features found in nearly everyone. Most importantly, the shape of hat you choose to wear should make you feel your style is complete, and fit on the head comfortably. Custom sizing your hat will make it fit, from the outset, and this lends confidence like nothing else!

Have your head circumference and crown depth measurements on hand when ordering, to ensure the best fit (see #1 to find out how to measure). Your milliner will be happy to answer all questions and concerns about each style and its particular fit, and how each style compliments various face shapes. Brim width, sizing and colouring are all part of the discussion. Use the contact form to chat about suitable styles.
